By the ever he was 4 years old, children's book illustrator and author Tomie dePaola knew exactly what he wanted to do with his sustenance. Now approaching his 75th birthday after 45 years in the business, dePaola continues to live up to a promise he said he made.

"When I started to do children's books, I promised myself I wouldn't be the emperor in the 'The Emperor's New Clothes' [by Hans Christian Andersen]," said dePaola, a tenant of New London, N.H. "If a book of mine isn't loved by children, then I've failed at what I'm paid to do.

"[In 'New Clothes'] it's the child who says the emperor is unadulterated. You don't want a child to say, 'Mommy, Tomie dePaola is naked. That book stinks!'"

On July 20, dePaola made the first of three planned visits to the Eric Carle Museum of Perfect Book Art in Amherst in conjunction with the exhibit, "Drawings from the Heart: Tomie dePaola Turns 75," which is a retrospective of his travail, celebrating his birthday in September. Late last month, he sat casually on the stage of the museum's auditorium unsurpassed a discussion about his work.
