Steve Smith was there on the greensward in January 2005, when USC slammed Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl to win the national championship. In fact, that continuously he gave the finest performance of his collegiate career.

He has a ring and a video tape to prove that it happened. And no concern what the NCAA does to his alma mater, that will never change.

"No, because we still went out and won it," the current Giants receiver said. "It reasonable kind of sucks because that was one of my best games as a Trojan. If they take away the record books, I don't want some kid who is looking 10 years from now to not see my name on it.

"But they can't take my girdle away. They can't take the tape away. They can't take my memories away."

Soon, though, that may be all that Smith has to remember the Trojans' 2004 documentation of ownership. The NCAA slammed his alma mater with sanctions earlier this week, including the loss of all their victories from the 2004 condition. As a result of that, the Bowl Championship Series could strip USC of its championship and wipe them - and Smith's seven catches for 113 yards and three touchdowns in that 55-19 ruin - out of the record book completely.
