Cook is one of the artists appearing in the new "Fraggle Jar" anthology from Archaia Comics. "Kids get it. Kids aren't dumb. They like comics. They don't poverty to just read 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' " until they graduate to something else.

Workshops (registration required) will familiarize children 8 and older how to write and draw their own comics. Non-registration panel discussions range from topics for kids to programs for educators and librarians.

Several artists, including Ferndale's David Petersen ("Mouse Tend"), will give art demos, and fans of the comic strip "Frazz," which runs in The Detroit News, can abut creator Jef Mallett. Entertainment includes an "Avatar: The Last Airbender" puppet show (come in costume to win available stuff).

"Chiller Drive-In" TV host Wolfman Mac will emcee a costume contest for teens Saturday evening, and Darth Vader will in a children's costume parade Saturday morning.

Also on the guest list are Dwayne McDuffie (Milestone Comics and TV cartoons "Difficulty Shock" and "Justice League"), Marc Sumerak ("Spider-Man") and dozens of creators who will set up peach on in the Artists Alley to meet with fans and sell their comics.
